Lesson = 3 Bromides And Sulphites

Q 1: This essay first appear in 1906. Does it seem dated, in its chief contention? In the examples of bromides remarks? In the person named as Bromides and Sulphites ?
Ans :
The essay "Bromides and Sulphites" first appear in 1906. So far as its chief contention is concerned, it can not be seem dated at all. The division of human being according to the writer, into Bromides and Sulphites is a universal idea and hence, it can not be seem dated at all. According to the writer, there are always be these two types of people, we may call them common and chosen, or Bromides and Sulphides after the writer but the fact is that the division is really universal. Therefore, so far as its cheif contention is concerned this essay does not seem dated at all. well the essay does not seem dated in that respects. Just see these remarks.
1-"The Bromides Follows the main-traveled roads, he goes with the crowd
.
2-They all think and talk alike.
3-One may predicate their opinion upon any subject.

6-His intellectual process are automatic.
7- And the most funny, the most ironic remark:
"Originality was inhibited in him since his great-grandmother's time. He has got this habit
Now let us take the last point of the question and see whether the essay seems dates in the persons names as Bromides and Sulphites. Well the essay seems dated in this respect. Whenever examples are to be added to an essay and these examples are given from history, the essay automatically becomes dated because a writer will either quote examples from the past or from the present. As the present of the writer is dated, the essay stands dated. No doubt, our writer has given examples from 18th and 19th century and he has also quote two characters form Shakespeare used in the play written in 1600-1601, i.e., in the beginning of 17th century, yet there are no examples from 1906 onward. The mention of Marie Corelli, a popular figure in late 19th century, but no more popular today, makes the essay seems dated. The mention of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedlay from Thackeray's masterpiece "vanity fair" is a routine matter. Shaw also does not dated the essay.
Q 2: What devices does Burgess to show the reader  the different between Bromide and Sulphite?
Ans:
In this essay "Bromides and Sulphites"   humanity into two distinct classes: "Bromides and Sulphides". First f all he explain what a bromide is and then, in contrast to that, he goes on to tell what a sulphide is. So the major device used by the writer the difference between both is contrast. Then hem uses another device. It is that from giving examples from literature and life. He also given the examples from constituent and U.S.A. He also given examples from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and Thackeray's " Vanity Fairs". It is through the examples and contrast that writer is able to prove his contention in satisfying manner.
